There are a plethora of setups a home cinema system can have, but generally speaking it includes a,

- Multi-channel amplifier
- Five speakers
- Subwoofer
However, there are many different options. For example, instead of a DVD player, a system could use a Bluray player, VHS player, Digital set top box, Games systems like a PS3 or a HD-DVD player. Instead of a multi-channel amplifier, a preamplifier, receiver and surround sound decoder could be included. When it comes to speakers, the option is usually restricted to either a five or seven speaker setup. Finally, a television or projector is required to complete the package.
Home cinema systems really came into their own with the introduction of DVD. DVD was the first mass produced media format that supported Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio, also referred to as 'surround sound'. What Dolby Digital 5.1 did was offer multichannel audio for the home, the 5.1 refers to five speakers and one subwoofer providing the bass. The speakers are centre, right, right surround, left, and left surround.
Before the mass introduction of 'surround sound' audio, the aural experience for most pairs of ears was a pair of speakers. It can therefore be disconcerting when experiencing audio going on all round us for the first time. But, it does offer distinct advantages, primarily an enhanced sense of realism once the initial uneasiness subsides.
When the decision has been made to buy a home cinema system, you can either assemble a system by purchasing separate components, or buy 'out of the box'. The 'out of the box' option is typically less expensive and more convenient. Though, the standard of these systems is for the mass market, and usually pale when compared to specialist component units. The decision will depend on your budget, and how serious you are about reproducing a cinema for your home.
The size of the room you plan to place your home cinema set will also impact on your decision. If your setting aside a dedicated cinema room, then this probably won't be a issue. But for an average sized living room, you will have to consider, do you want a set of speakers to dominate your space?
For optimum performance a full-size speaker package is the ideal choice, because, they provide an improved frequency range and deeper bass. For space saving, a set of satellite speakers is the solution, due to their discreet and tidy dimensions. Virtually all 'out of the box' systems come with satellite speakers.
Recent developments. Since the year 2000 manufacturers have continued to improve the quality of visual displays and the DVD format itself. High Definition 'HD' and Bluray are the the current format improvements.
